Kistler's Trout in the Classroom Program

The sixth grade gifted support science class participated in the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program this year. Pennsylvania TIC is an interdisciplinary program during which the students learn about cold water conservation while raising brook trout from eggs in a classroom aquarium. The students raised the brook trout from eggs received back in October and released them on May 15. Once the young trout were released, water quality studies were conducted. The first picture shows the students conducting chemistry tests on the water. The second picture shows the students entering the water to use kick seines, which are nets used to collect macro-invertebrates. The students took pictures of the macro-invertebrates to help study and document them which also helps to assess the quality of the water. All organisms are returned safely to the water so that our studies have a minimal impact on the environment. The students enjoyed learning ecology, science, and math both in the classroom and in the field.
