Wilkes-Barre Area School District News Article

Welcome to Gifted Science

Science Rocks

Dear Parents,

My name is Mrs. Yvonne Corcoran, and I will be your child’s gifted support science teacher this year. I am excited about teaching your child, and I know that our school year will be productive.

Let me tell you a little about our science curriculum. Wilkes-Barre Area’s Science curriculum is inquiry based in which students learn skills through observation, inference, and experimentation. During our science lessons, your child will be asking questions, planning and conducting investigations, using appropriate tools and techniques to gather data, thinking critically and logically, constructing and analyzing alternative explanations, and communicating scientific arguments. The science curriculum is a hands-on approach to learning.

I do not give nightly science homework. I do expect students to write down any homework in their homework planner when it is given. I ask that parents check the agenda on a daily basis for upcoming science tests and projects. Students can use their science notebooks for quizzes so students need to take clear and accurate notes in class. A notebook grade is also given each quarter. Tests are not open notebook. Gifted students will be responsible to complete quarterly science projects. The students will complete these projects at home and then present them to the class. Directions on how to complete the science projects will be given to your child each quarter. Please note that all test, quiz, and project grades will be sent home for the parents to see. Tests do not need to be signed and returned since most parents have access to their child’s grades through Skyward.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. The school phone number is 826-7222, and my email is [email protected]. I look forward to meeting you and discussing in more detail these items and your child’s progress.

Thank you,
Mrs. Yvonne Corcoran
