Mrs. Comitz's 7th grade STEM activity

After finishing our unit on Motion and Forces a 7th grade class was given a STEM challenge: The Great Egg Drop!  Students had a week to design and construct, at home, a container which successfully stopped an egg from cracking when dropped at a high distance.  They could use any material, but the challenge was also to build the lightest (least mass).  All contraptions were massed and then the students placed the egg inside.  First we dropped in the classroom from on top of the desk.  Surviving eggs were then taken to the lobby and dropped from the second floor balcony.  Finally, surviving eggs were dropped from the 3rd floor balcony.  The students did a fantastic job!  Only 4 out of 17 eggs cracked and the lightest mass came in at 20.36g!
