Medical NewsThe United States is experiencing an outbreak of enterovirus D68. Enterovirus D68 is essentially an upper respiratory illness which commonly occurs in the summer and fall. This year the virus has been unusually more severe and has occurred predominately in children and children with asthma.

Symptoms of the virus can be severe or mild. Mild symptoms may include a fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough and muscle aches. Severe symptoms may include wheezing and difficulty breathing. Those children with severe symptoms should be seen by their doctor and remain home from school.

As a parent or guardian, you can prevent the spread and occurrence of this illness in your children;

Encouraging frequent and proper hand washing with soap and water.
Disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, avoid close contact with people who are sick,
Cover your cough with a tissue or shirt sleeve, not your hand.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
