First Grade Orthopedists in Mrs. Payne's PLTW STEM Class
Students in Mrs. Payne’s PLTW Stem class work on a unit called Structure and Function of the Human Body.  In this unit the children read a story where a character, Angelina, falls off the monkey bars and hurts her arm.  Students follow Angelina’s case as they progress through the module, learning about the relationship between structure and function in the human body.  We investigated major structures, or organs, within the body. We discussed the function of each organ. This activity challenges the students to put together a model X-ray of a hand.  Students will do an inquiry investigation to understand why each of our fingers are made up of more than one bone. Finally, students will work through an engineering design process to design and build a cast for Angelina.
