Face Mask Update-Important! Face masks must be worn by students and adults/visitors while on school district property. This includes anyone who is escorting students to school or picking-up children at dismissal-all individuals must wear a facial covering as per our social distancing and face mask requirements.

Kindergarten Virtual Orientation will now be Tuesday, September 1st, 2020 @ 6:00 PM. Our Superintendent, Dr. Brian Costello, will be holding a live meeting for all parents/guardians of students who are attending Option 1 school on Wednesday, September 2nd. In order to accommodate families who are interested in participating in Dr. Costello's meeting on Wednesday, we have moved our kindergarten orientation to Tuesday, September 1st at 6:00 PM. Please check back here for the Orientation Meeting Link and Call-In number.

I hope students and families have stayed safe and well this summer! We are busy preparing and planning for the opening of the school year. Over the next few weeks, I will provide important information here on our school website about returning our students to school. Here are a few items to keep in mind:
*Kindergarten Orientation will be Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020 @ 6:00 PM.
Due to the Pandemic, this year's orientation will be VIRTUAL/online. Therefore, a Google meeting link with access information and a call-in code will be provided on this website.
*The first day of school is Friday, September 11, 2020.
*Every student will receive a school district chromebook to utilize. Students who are not attending school in-person will be given a day and time for chromebook pick-up sometime in the near future.
*The average class size for students who are physically coming to school is no larger than 10-12 students, giving us the ability to properly social distance in the classroom.
*Option 1 students are required to wear masks in school at all times, but will be given a break when able to properly social distance and meeting teacher directive.
*There will be two blocks of instructional time for Option 2 students to be present online during the school day: 9:30-11:45 & 12:30-2:45. Attendance will be taken.
*Student behavior expectations will be shared for Option 1 and 2-it is imperative that families review the expectations with their children to ensure the safety and proper educational opportunities are maintained for all.

We hope students and families enjoyed the parade last Thursday evening! We enjoyed seeing our students' and community members! it was a great experience for everyone!
The last day of school is Friday, June 5th. Students and families should check-in with teachers to finalize assignments and complete participation requirements.
Student Meals The school district's breakfast and lunch distribution has concluded. We thank Nutrition Inc. for their hard work and dedication to our students!
*The Mt. Zion Baptist Church will continue to distribute frozen dinners at our school 11:30-1:00 daily until further notice.

Student Belongings Pick-Up Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2nd and 3rd, from 11:00 am-7:00 pm, are designated days and times that student belongings may be picked-up in our gym. Chromebook Return Opportunity will also be Tuesday or Wednesday, June 2nd and 3rd, from 11:00 am-7:00 pm. The charge cord and chromebook must be returned at the same time.
Heights on Parade! Typically, at the end of the school year, we host a' Kindergarten Celebration' at school to recognize the significant academic growth students make in Kindergarten. We also host a 6th Grade 'Moving Up' Ceremony to recognize our 6th grade students' achievements and share our well wishes with them and their families for junior high school success. In honor of these celebrations and to also give our students the opportunity to see their teachers, Heights-Murray Elementary School teachers and staff will be participating in a parade with their personal vehicles. Please click on the following link for our parade route. The parade will be Thursday, May 28, 2020, starting at 6:00 PM in the Laurel Run Estates. All students and families who are interested in seeing their parade should adhere to social distancing guidelines along the route.

Week of May 18, 2020
Congratulations again to our 100% Student Participation winners from the week of May 4th! Mr. McKenna delivered 14 prize bags to our winning students' homes last Thursday (2 from every grade). I can't wait to see who wins this week! Keep up the great work! Winners will be announced on Thursday and prize bags will be delivered for the week of May 11th!
The Children's Free Food Pantry will be at Heights' front entrance on Thursday, 5/21/20, @ 11:30-1:00 PM. Vehicles are recommended vs. walking for pick-up. Please pull through the front driveway to the school's main entrance. The box of food will be at the curb for pick-up. All food will be boxed for pick-up, and visitors must wear a mask.
Kindergarten and End of Year Celebratory Parade-Typically, we host a Kindergarten Celebration to recognize students for their hard work throughout the year. Due to the school closure, we decided to have a parade for students! Kindergarten teachers will share details with parent/guardians through their communication apps. In addition to celebrating our kindergarten student accomplishments, we hope that all students will join in the fun! Teachers and staff will be parading through the Heights' school territory on Thursday, May 28, 2020, @ 6:00 PM. A parade route will be shared on our website next week. Come by and wave to teachers and staff to celebrate the year's accomplishments!

Week of May 11, 2020
This week, we are kicking-off a raffle for students to participate in by meeting the 100% participation goal for their classes. For the remainder of the school year, teachers from each grade will submit students' names who have met 100% of teacher expectations for each week. The names will be entered in a raffle and two students from each grade will be selected and announced on Thursdays for the previous week. A special prize bag will be delivered to their home! All 100% Participation student names will be updated weekly to our 'Student Achievement & Recognition' section on our school website.
Friday, June 5th, 2020 is the last day of school. Our annual '6th Grade Moving Up Ceremony' will be presented to students and their families, virtually, on June 4th. We'd like to recognize our 6th grade students who are moving up and on to junior high next school year!
The 3rd Quarter grades were finalized last week as the last 3rd quarter end date was March 13th. Report cards will not be mailed home until the end of the 4th quarter and will display both the 3rd and 4th quarter grades. Please make sure to access your family Skyward account to review any previous grades. If you do not have Skyward access, please visit parent resources website on our district website to request Skyward Access.
We will develop a plan to make student items from their classrooms available for pick-up at a later date. Please check back here for updates about that.
Upcoming Event: '570 On the Go' Meal Distribution will be at every elementary school this upcoming weekend, May 16th and 17th @ 1:00-3:00 PM. Please stop by Heights for a delicious take-away meal and snack. Students must accompany a parent/guardian.
Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner distribution continues to be distributed at the South Side, daily, 11:30am-1:00pm.
The Free Children's Food Pantry will be Thursday, May 21st, 11:30am-1:00pm @ Heights' main entrance.

Welcome to May 2020 & Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to our teachers!
Please join me while recognizing our teachers for their dedication to our students and school, their compassion, and tireless efforts to assure our students receive the best educational experience possible! We hope the students enjoy participating in this week’s online spirit activities and share photos with their teachers??
Heights families, we thank you for your continued cooperation during our school closure and remote learning time. Please continue to stay in touch with your child’s teacher(s) and ensure the assignments are completed and submitted according to specified timelines. In addition, all students should participate during the teacher’s scheduled live session weekly.
The 3rd quarter grades will soon be finalized as of March 13th, 2020-the last day school was in session. Teachers have
previously provided students with the opportunity to complete any 3rd quarter missed graded assignments until the end of this week.
The Wilkes-Barre Area School District’s 4th quarter grading guidelines are attached below and are also available on the school district’s main website for review. It is imperative that our students continue to participate and complete assignments to promote continued learning achievement.

If students are not participating and/or submitting assignments, phone calls are made on a weekly basis to the parents/guardians of non-participating students. Our goal is to work together during this time, maintain communication, and promote continued educational and social-emotional experiences for your children.
