Classes
I teach 7th and 8th grade Developmental Reading.  The main emphasis in class is developing fiction and non-fiction reading skills. The 2013 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) reading test results demonstrate that far too many young people continue to read below grade level. Sixty five percent of all U.S. fourth graders scored “below proficient,” which means that they are not reading at grade level. My students will complete both fiction and non-fiction reading skills during each class. To support and reinforce what is covered in class, students will have homework four days a week (Monday through Thursday).  Independent reading is strongly encouraged - the more a student reads, the larger their vocabulary becomes, the greater their background knowledge, and the better their reading performance becomes.  (You may order books for your student through Scholastic Book Clubs ...our class code is L4QZ4 - Scholastic will inform me of your order and it will be delivered to school. You may also take advantage of the Osterhout Public Library.)
Due to the possibility of changing learning settings, the class will be virtually paperless.  Google Classroom will be the method of distributing materials.  There will also be the opportunity to visit other websites this year to work on reading and writing skills: ReadTheory.org; Padlet; and Vocabulary.com to name a few.
My classes will be participating in the Global Read Aloud again this year.  The Global Read Aloud is a 6-week experience (beginning in October) during which the class will connect with classes from other parts of North America to share the reading experience and discuss what they have read/learned (in a written format).
A vital part of each student's education is the working relationship between all three parties - student, teacher, and the adults raising the student. Therefore, it is important that skyward becomes a part of the discussion. Stay current with the information provided through Skyward: Skyward Access.  Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.
I am looking forward to a productive and fun year of learning!
