Olivia Pizzella, an 11th grade student at Coughlin High School and member of the Junior Leadership Class of 2018 will chair “Bark in the Park.”

Project “Bark in the Park 5k for the SPCA” will take place on Saturday, April 14, at 10a.m., at Kirby Park.  Registration begins at 9a.m., and the cost is $15.  All money raised will go towards the purchase of animal beds at the Luzerne County SPCA.

As one of only 70 students representing 16 high schools in Luzerne County, Olivia has dedicated more than 1,500 hours of community service, helping to raise thousands of dollars to bettering the community and missions of several local non-profits.  The selective program for high school juniors enables participants to develop their leadership skills while increasing community awareness.

The Junior Leadership Program, a branch of Leadership Wilkes-Barre, offers students the opportunity to work with adult leaders through day-long seminars over a nine-month period.  It focuses on creating leadership skills in areas such as media, government, and civic engagement, citizenship, diversity, and the justice system.  Junior Leadership promotes servant leadership and community engagement.

Each student leader must complete a community service project which challenges them to use their leadership skills to address community needs.  Olivia, and her group, have chosen a cause close to their hearts; helping animals.  They hope to raise over $5,000 to purchase beds for the local SPCA.

Please come out and support this worthy cause on Saturday.  Runners and walkers may preregister for this event by clicking the link below. See you at the finish line!
